What a movie, what an era!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e   \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e2016 was the year when I first released ‘Lost in Hollywood’ and I created a wonderful piece on this movie entitled ‘I’ll Be Right Here’. It was subtle but equally blatant. The forest, the bikes and the lights from the spaceship drew you in, it’s intriguing and captivating. It was only when you looked closer, into the darkness that you could then spot the glow of our little alien’s heart. It is funny how many people who own this piece never realised until I pointed out at subsequent gallery shows. I love that! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere then followed a second piece – entitled ‘I Never Left’ but this was part of my ‘Love Knows No Bounds’ body of work as you saw the little man stood there on the rock looking towards Elliott, who you couldn’t see but knew he was there as the front of his BMX tyre had just come into view. The purpose of that piece and the body of work was to focus in on the bond between two individuals and what they will do in the name of love. I love how popular that series has become, for so many reasons. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, what we see now is completely different to both, yet still represents the spirit of the two. This time, the image is delivered in my hugely successful VHS format, this is perfect as the subtle, neutral tones of the background draw you in and immerses you within scene. In complete contrast to hiding in the shadows or being a small part of the scene, this time E.T. is oversized and in your face as much as in your heart. The reason for this and if you look closely is that it conveys the sense that it is his spirit that remains, beautifully conveying the previous two titles whilst clarifying the new one. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe strapline, ‘In every sunrise and each time the wind blows’ symbolises how the bond between two that grew to be so strong whilst together is unbreakable when apart and that that person has never truly left and will remain there for the other, always. This was so important for me to embrace for this movie and beyond because there is such a widespread affiliation for the film and it’s narrative for this reason, yes it’s a brilliant 80’s feast but it’s the sentiment that resonates with so many of us. A genuine family favourite of mine as I remember watching the 1983 film with my brothers way back as kids one night before Christmas and the book didn’t prepare me for what was to come, genuinely terrifying and real, no silly effects or big actors, just images that still make me go cold to this day. It was the power of the figure on the marshes that was the most gripping, the sense of isolation and truly being haunted by someone with so much subtle anger. I own one of the original video cassettes of the film and have made countless friends sit down and watch it in the pitch black, patio doors open and all, it was the first film that my partner and I watched together, obsessed? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI’ve also been lucky enough to watch the play adaptation at the Fortune Theatre twice and absolutely loved everything about the venue and the play so the chance to create my own interpretation and tell my story is incredible. The intention has always been to create a scene that was beautiful, serene and calm yet that showed details that pulled on the heart strings, that were full of sorrow and sadness and that would make you think a little deeper. I wanted to compose a piece that did just the same as the original did, to inject a small detail that turned the image on it’s head, that detail being the unforgettable silhouetted figure of Jennet Drablow dressed in her funeral attire. The thought of creating something dramatic and over the top didn’t interest me, it just wouldn’t be right for this subject. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is one point where on the marshes Arthur Kipp knows that something terrifying is there and spins to reveal the silhouette, I wanted to create that factor where you are focused on the beautiful detail, you know something is there but try to avoid looking because you desperately don’t want to see her. The impact that Jennet had on all those who saw her was brutal and most often terminal but it is another case of not being born bad, it shows what we assume to be a normal woman who’s life is turned upside down through bearing a child out of wedlock and then losing him twice. We see hatred born towards her sister Alice who took her son from her and who couldn’t save him from the sinking mud and rising tide of the Nine Lives Causeway committing Jennet to a world of hatred and inflicted insanity. Is blood truly thicker than water? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt really is a story of the unforgiven - Jennet for having a child out of wedlock and Alice for being blamed for taking her son and not saving him. Details within the scene show the relationship between Jennet and her son, Nathaniel, an ageing teddy, a wooden train (links to how Arthur travelled to Criffin Gifford), poignant images that showed so much more before she faded to black. As with so much of my work I have created the piece to leave a lot to interpretation rather than dictating, you might look at it and think that you are looking at the point in time within the original narrative however if you look a little deeper you will notice the ruined Eel Marsh House, a broken rocking chair (I had to do that as that damned thing terrified me!) that suggest that time has moved by and the shifting tides have withdrawn to reveal objects previously hidden. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYet Jennet remains, destined to stand there alone. It is such a terrifying story line, how could it not be when children are lost in horrific circumstances throughout, yet personally the subsequent remakes of the film seem to make it hard to find any apathy towards the woman in black because of how hyped up every detail was. My hope is that I manage to make people think, to consider the events that took a woman, a mother and made a monster. \"They have asked for my story. I have told it. The format and my determination to go the extra mile, created editions that had an original quality to them with the hand finished detail and customisation, whilst the size allowed for collectors to either fill that awkward space or create a cracking collection of their favourite movies from the pieces that I created. They have been so popular and have led to several other formats that have evolved my brand as well as my portfolio. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn truth, I have been wanting to create a box set edition for what seems like an age. As with so much, it is all a question of timing and I guess the best things come to those who wait eh! 2016 was the year when I launched my now sought after ‘Lost in Hollywood’ series of iconic movies. Each film has so many possible interpretations, the possibilities are vast! When you then have the opportunity to embrace follow up editions through sequels then it really does open the door to truly embrace the collectability nature of my art and movie box sets that so many of us loved to own. I guess it was my destiny! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI am so proud of my Star Wars pieces that I have created to date, I have always strived to produce respectful works that amplify all that is amazing with the earlier films, embracing the very essence of darkness and light and the battle between good and bad! In line with these works, I have always been honest to acknowledge that I am not a Star Wars obsessive, but I respect those that are. So, I have continually strived to create exciting and powerful pieces of art that amplify all that we know and love from growing up as kids whilst not trying to make them be something that they shouldn’t. Thank you. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, with 2024 marking a decade in this ridiculous industry, I saw it as the perfect time to deliver a new format that opens the opportunity to create others on movies that are acclaimed for their multiples. I already know what I will take on next! For now, though, I need to block that out of my mind, not an easy task. Some VHS editions lend themselves perfectly to adapting an earlier piece into the format and that is cool, however for The Trilogy box set I wanted it to be all new, and wow! I am so bloody pleased with the results! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOk so my thinking was this. I wanted to showcase the three original movies, ‘A New Hope’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘The Return of The Jedi’ and whilst ensuring that each image was dramatic in its own right, I wanted them to flow from one to another and not to jolt as you looked from left to right. They had to work as one. I knew that the key factor to the success of this piece would be the choice of scene to depict. I know everyone has their own and you can’t please everyone, but I did so much research into what was deemed to be the most iconic moments from each and then if I could get them to work and to resonate, not just with my audience but with myself to remain authentic. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, let’s start with ‘A New Hope’ – the scene that I have based my artwork on is so incredibly powerful and full of emotion. The colours are beautiful and draw parallels with my 2019 piece ‘Shifting Sands’. The isolated figure of Luke stood watching the horror that he came back to, that sense of helplessness is so strong. The detail that I then injected into the scene had to be subtle but play a part and acknowledge that this was the moment when he would ultimately choose his destiny and channel that hurt that would fuel his fire. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSecond was ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and wow, what a moment. In 2016 I created a unique piece entitled ‘Teach You I Will’ that depicted Yoda through smoked outlines. The background hinted at being the swamps of Dagobah, an environment that always fascinated me as a kid watching the movie. So, for me, this had to be the scene, when Luke is being trained and guided by Yoda and set on his path. That moment when the X-Wing was lifted out from the swamp was so damned good! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFinally, if you know my work then you know that I love to work within forest scenes and ‘The Return of The Jedi’ gave me a cracking opportunity to do just that. A much earlier piece ‘Battles Passed’ took you to the forests of Endor and was such a wonderfully subtle scene where key details were hidden and obscured. This time however, I wanted to go big and showcase the battle that raged amongst the beautiful fauna, such a contrast! One powerful detail that is so serene is the puddle that shows the reflection of a very special trio. I love how this has turned out. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI am so pleased with the result, not just how 3 VHS’s work alongside each other but with how the three images complement and contrast. Each is a very different movie, yet the overriding narrative is one of choosing your destiny, being set on the right path by those who inspire and guide you, even through spirit. It’s the importance of acknowledging the destructive force of the dark side despite its appeal when you are vulnerable and embracing the good around you and within. His battles with Batman are represented by the iconic bat icon burning as lava before the fires burn and the glass shatters as he shows his hand. His card changes to show a bloodied Batman as he hurls a number of other cards right at you. If you have played your cards right and secured a VHS edition, the glazing cracks and melts from the force of pure hatred whilst the insanely powerful lenticular piece plays this scene out right in front of you as you move closer. Luckily, it seems that the earlier films were a bit easier to stomach, the effects were not as brutal as what they are now so I could just about deal with it, proper ‘gangsta’ me! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJust like the ‘Godfather’ movies, I knew so much about ‘Scarface’ but had never actually watched it in full. So, when I came to finally getting down to watching the movie, cushion at the ready, I had to do more research than normal as I needed to really understand the narrative. So, when I kept seeing ‘chainsaw scene’ pop up on web pages, I started to feel a twitch! The initial plan was to release this piece purely in my ’VHS’ format and for it to be driven by the 1980s Miami setting, yet even at the initial research stage and before even watching the film, there was something that really struck me with Tony Montana’s office. The scale of the lamps, the colours, the backdrop – there was something that kept making me go back to it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, despite getting that buzz knowing that something special could come from this, I sat down and watched the film and the ‘Pacino’ masterclass. What a movie, a shining example of how greed really does breed monsters. I loved it, absolutely loved it and my mind was well and truly made up on the chosen direction for this piece. I instead chose to lead with a full scene image that was set within Tony’s office and mimic the composition from my 2021 ‘Godfather’ piece ‘Vendetta’ that took you inside ‘Don Corleone’s’ office and right in front of the main man himself. Powerful. So, what you now see is Montana sat at his desk, looking to his right slightly. The ideal scenario would be that collectors who had ‘Vendetta’ could then hang ‘The World Is Yours’ adjacent to it so that Tony is half looking towards the Don, a subtle nod of respect. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe end result is one that I feel so bloody excited about, the impact is dramatic, whilst the sense of accomplishment is right up there, as I pieced the office together from scratch as I did with ‘Vendetta’. I love a challenge and even more when that seed grows and manifests into something really special. There are so many cracking references for you to seek out, have you spotted that the interior fabric of his open briefcase matches that iconic tropical red shirt that he wore in the film? Study this piece whilst listening to ‘Tony’s theme from the movie soundtrack and it is so powerful. So, you can simply enjoy as a cracking tribute to the film or for those that have an obsession over it, I have added some really subtle links. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike I have said before, I spend so much time researching, looking into fan theories as well as professional interpretations and movie trivia. I was particularly drawn to the use of violet throughout the film, it features heavily and is suggested that it is due to the fact that the colour represents death. I made sure to bring this into my piece and centre mainly behind Montana. Now it links to the other key element, the blackened bird that has flown in through the open doors and is rising up behind him whilst his back is turned. As with ‘Vendetta’ and the ‘Godfather’ movie where the use of oranges was often placed to suggest death is close by, the Raven is representing how his enemies are rising up behind him, none more so than we saw in the epic final scene where he goes down in a ‘Yeyo’ fuelled blaze of glory by being picked off by ‘The Skull’. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo, for a ‘late starter’ I hope I have done this incredible movie justice as I know how people really love the film. I have created some incredibly powerful pieces that focus on the mindset of the Joker, but I wanted to conceive an image that was more driven by Batman. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIs ‘The Dark Knight’ one of the most influential movies of all time? Quite possibly! The acting by both Christian Bale and Heath Ledger is nothing short of a masterclass. So, the decision was an easy one, this image was to be inspired by Christopher Nolan’s epic movie. However, I was adamant that I didn’t want my image to end up looking like one of the amazing backdrops that ran with the promotion of the film back in 2008. It could have easily happened, what with my love for all things that burn! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, even though I set about focused on Batman, the influence of the Joker cannot be overlooked, so he features albeit pulled back and walking away from you, but his impact is catastrophic and claustrophobic. The composition of the piece has been created to depict two opposites, chaos and order, darkness and light, evil and good. A showman versus a silent protector, a dark knight. The choice to show the Joker with back turned was influenced by the recent success of my ‘Storyteller’ piece ‘Fight or Flight’ that also featured a figure with back turned, walking away – it is so much more powerful in my opinion. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI appreciate that the fan base of this movie especially are true ‘die-hards’ and not only did I want to respect that but I wanted to not risk playing safe. The introduction of the characters is exciting, but the image is strong enough not to rely on them. I love them, it takes the piece to a new height but then look past them and there is so much detail to seek out as well as some obscure references to really test you! You know how big a deal music is to me and the influence it has on my work, having the soundtrack on throughout without a doubt drove me to inject so much more into what you see. Even with it being played on loop on the local radio station, it got me every time. Whoever decided to start dubbing the instrumental version over clips of Leeds United clinching promotion has a lot to answer for! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe real-life events of the disaster has always struck a chord with me since school days, it is hard to choose the right word to describe it given the unimaginable loss involved but your mind was full trying to comprehend the events of that voyage. The movie is a truly stunning depiction and is one of the all-time greats, a movie that I have wanted to take on for many a year. I have had so many thoughts as to possible directions that I could take the piece, some much darker than others but maybe that is best suited to a commissioned piece. I wanted to create a piece of art that was really different, that focused on the love story and fortitude, whilst not forgetting the tragedy. For a movie to be adored by so many, I needed to deliver an image that would suit a wide audience and one that would look beautiful on a wall. I knew I could make the iconic scene of the sinking look stunning, but would that be right for your typical home setting? I can also see legs (almost a pun!) in a beautiful scene that focused on the grand staircase. His sketching experience with the beautiful English Rose must have been incredible, at least he wasn’t short of options to rest his sketchbook on! My experiences of life drawing classes were very, very different. Stinking rooms that were so hot from the heater to not just keep the fossilised model warm but alive! How could I possibly get the anatomical proportions right when I’m staring at the worst case of ‘long bollock’ that my innocent eyes had ever seen?! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJoking aside, what a wonderfully intimate and powerful scene that was, the movie not mine! For someone that has a phobia of jewellery, I loved the stunning ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace that Rose wore, to then see how it played such a special role in the narrative was really something. I have created a beautiful version in my piece that features Jack and Rose in their iconic pose. If you look closely, you can see water droplets cascading off the diamonds to suggest that it is rising back from the ocean floor, nothing is gone forever. Luckily, it seems that the earlier films were a bit easier to stomach, the effects were not as brutal as what they are now so I could just about deal with it, proper ‘gangsta’ me! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJust like the ‘Godfather’ movies, I knew so much about ‘Scarface’ but had never actually watched it in full. So, when I came to finally getting down to watching the movie, cushion at the ready, I had to do more research than normal as I needed to really understand the narrative. So, when I kept seeing ‘chainsaw scene’ pop up on web pages, I started to feel a twitch! The initial plan was to release this piece purely in my ’VHS’ format and for it to be driven by the 1980s Miami setting, yet even at the initial research stage and before even watching the film, there was something that really struck me with Tony Montana’s office. The scale of the lamps, the colours, the backdrop – there was something that kept making me go back to it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, despite getting that buzz knowing that something special could come from this, I sat down and watched the film and the ‘Pacino’ masterclass. What a movie, a shining example of how greed really does breed monsters. I loved it, absolutely loved it and my mind was well and truly made up on the chosen direction for this piece. I instead chose to lead with a full scene image that was set within Tony’s office and mimic the composition from my 2021 ‘Godfather’ piece ‘Vendetta’ that took you inside ‘Don Corleone’s’ office and right in front of the main man himself. Powerful. So, what you now see is Montana sat at his desk, looking to his right slightly. The ideal scenario would be that collectors who had ‘Vendetta’ could then hang ‘The World Is Yours’ adjacent to it so that Tony is half looking towards the Don, a subtle nod of respect. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe end result is one that I feel so bloody excited about, the impact is dramatic, whilst the sense of accomplishment is right up there, as I pieced the office together from scratch as I did with ‘Vendetta’. I love a challenge and even more when that seed grows and manifests into something really special. There are so many cracking references for you to seek out, have you spotted that the interior fabric of his open briefcase matches that iconic tropical red shirt that he wore in the film? Study this piece whilst listening to ‘Tony’s theme from the movie soundtrack and it is so powerful. So, you can simply enjoy as a cracking tribute to the film or for those that have an obsession over it, I have added some really subtle links. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike I have said before, I spend so much time researching, looking into fan theories as well as professional interpretations and movie trivia. I was particularly drawn to the use of violet throughout the film, it features heavily and is suggested that it is due to the fact that the colour represents death. I made sure to bring this into my piece and centre mainly behind Montana. Now it links to the other key element, the blackened bird that has flown in through the open doors and is rising up behind him whilst his back is turned. As with ‘Vendetta’ and the ‘Godfather’ movie where the use of oranges was often placed to suggest death is close by, the Raven is representing how his enemies are rising up behind him, none more so than we saw in the epic final scene where he goes down in a ‘Yeyo’ fuelled blaze of glory by being picked off by ‘The Skull’. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo, for a ‘late starter’ I hope I have done this incredible movie justice as I know how people really love the film. The great thing is that the key element from the piece has translated so well into the VHS format as an alternative option for lovers of those smaller collectible artworks.
