The characters were just so quirky and great and the whimsical English riverbank scenes were the perfect backdrop, along with the contrasting darkness of the weasels and the wild wood. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt's funny, as I sit here and write this narrative to accompany this piece there is a beautiful weeping willow tree and it’s flipping windy! The only thing is it’s mid-February so there are bugger all leaves on it but there are the small signs of buds forming. I love it when I see these as I love when Winter turns to Spring, something that I use a lot in my work as a concept. The only downside of seeing these little green lumps is that it also shouts to me that I have to soon start on the preparation for the next collection later in the year! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWay back in 2015, there was a commissioned piece on The Wind in the Willows entitled ‘Appetite for Destruction’ – no, the Guns and Roses belter wasn’t part of the soundtrack, imagine that! Basically, my interpretation of the stories back then was a surreal one, and a dark one at that. It focused on the self-destruction of my favourite character, Toad! I loved his eccentricity and chaos. That piece is one to seek out as it plays out the point where Toad Hall is in flames and burning and all that remains is his cherished sports car that sits beneath a beautiful willow tree. Details that surround the car suggest a dark scenario, it’s beautiful and dark. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHowever, despite fighting the urge to inject darkness whilst creating ‘Wanderlust’, I am so pleased with what you now see. The aim was to create a truly beautiful and serene piece that would sit perfectly with ‘Keep Me in Your Heart’, my earlier ‘Winnie The Pooh’ piece that captured the imagination of so many. It’s great to really mix things up as an artist and my ‘Wolves, Wonderment and Wanderlust’ represents exactly that. I love switching from a quirky retro inspired piece to a really dark and intense scene and then dropping something like this that is just utterly beautiful and light. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is so much potential to create many pieces based on the The Wind in the Willows, the Wild Wood appeals and I will tackle that, but ‘Fight or Flight’ takes that spot in this collection as it is set within a dark forest. Next time, next chapter. I love the river; I hate rowing boats! Well, that was born from being petrified as a kid on a boating lake in Ypres – Belgium and I don’t think I’ve been in one since, a swan pedalo doesn’t count right? I set about basing this piece on the river, not only because I knew that it would become a wonderful image, but I like to test myself and working with water and the reflections is a challenge to get it right. Especially when you have little points of reference to guide you when you choose to have a goggle wearing toad and smiling mole frolicking (that’s a great word isn’t it!) in the water. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWanderlust represents a strong desire to travel, so I thought it a fitting title for what you see before you. I have built on that and evolved it to become the desire to be free also, in whatever form that happens to be. I love to connect with my collectors in many ways and this image is a classic example of one that can simply be enjoyed as a beautiful and happy image, whilst also representing a secondary meaning. Whereas my earlier commissioned piece was more obscure, ‘Wanderlust’ is true to the sentiment of the story. Don’t you just love seeing how proud old Badger looks as he sits on the boat looking out at his companions. It’s the tiny details that I inject that transform what could be quite a sterile element and make it magical and full of emotion.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI hope that I have done this fascinating classic justice in my approach, whilst also hoping to have captured the hearts of those who see much more. Look closely at the detail and you’ll see the subtle butterflies and dandelions that float upwards and towards the sun. It’s that sense of being free that I hope will resonate and bring comfort to many. That can be on many levels but ultimately it is a call to let yourself go, to travel, have fun and be free, however you choose. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, grab your bathers and let’s go boatin’! Art with meaning, it is how I speak, how I scream, how I bleed. Do you see this as a truly dark piece, or much, much lighter? I’m genuinely really interested to hear your interpretation. Everyone’s minds and stories are different. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe scene is set deep within a forest, and further on than what was shown back in 2015 and my ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ piece. I have taken a bold step to introduce the cloaked figure with the single intention that it truly transforms the emotion that this piece of art exonerates. By being shown from behind, I hope it resonates with many, many people. The moment I placed the figure (I refrain from saying ‘her’ for the reason I just mentioned) it genuinely brought tears to my eyes. I know why I created this piece and that moment when the impact of the image and its narrative just hits you right in-between the eyes. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYou see someone who is on a path, a journey, a moment when they walk on, approached by, and flanked by wolves. Each wolf represents another challenge, another beast that needs to be tamed, if not killed. Look closely, a wolf is literally on their back, I did say look closely! Now look at the cloak, look at the sheer depth and richness of that red. With that saturation comes shadows and there lies the problem. Light and dark, very dark. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBlackened, twisting thorns are interwoven with red roses and drive their way through the forest floor. Darkness resides to light in such a way that it can trip you up, the most painful falls are the unexpected ones. Sweetest tongue, sharpest tooth. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRose petals from their cloak leave a trail of love and kindness reinforcing that the figure is good, wonderfully good yet who’s feet grow tired with the weight of the wolf on their back. Not every beast can be killed, sometimes it is just the acceptance that it can’t ever truly be slain but it can at least be tamed through the act of love, loving oneself. Keeping one’s wolves at bay can be enough to help you on your path. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA truly beautiful and pivotal detail within this scene is what exists beyond the figure, a clearing, a brief respite. What exists even before that is crucial. A beautiful white deer stands fixated and offers that much-needed guidance. Look upwards, the all-seeing owl offers wisdom in decision making. All hope is not lost. It never will be. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA copse can over time turn into a forest, those trees grow taller, denser, and harder to navigate between. The roots if fed, grow deeper and thicker and turn what was a thin trunk into something much stronger that creates darker shadows. Branches grow outwards and mask the light, to the point that it becomes harder to see the light of day and you become lost, lost in a forest of denial. If left unattended, what was once easily managed becomes so gnarled and claustrophobic that all hope can become lost and the brightest of sunlight is unable to penetrate through. Forests have clearings that offer respite and space to breathe, space to think before you’re back amongst the thick of it but stronger, taller. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEveryone is different, everyone’s reasons for becoming lost are different. We all choose different paths, we deviate off them, we are pushed and kicked off them but with guidance we can, and always must find our way back to our path. That path may then look very different to how it looked when our footsteps were lighter and shadows smaller, or when more walked with us, but it is our path. Keep your head up so that you can see the signs and your eyes open to acknowledge the dangers. How far in do you go before you admit and accept that you are lost? Do you choose a longer way out but it’s your way or do you accept guidance from others? There’s never any shame in that, sometimes the forest is just too dense and dark and you’re tired. With tiredness comes weakness and that leaves you open to attack from the wolves, either those that surround you, those that hide and hunt in packs or from the wolf within. Which has the sharpest tooth? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut please, no matter how dense the forest is that you walk within, remember that every forest comes to an end, and in its place, space to see, space to breathe and with it, the first steps on your path. You hold the axe, make your mark, small, sustained cuts initially or a single blow. This applies to how you enter, and how you leave your forest. The strongest trees can fall. Many of you won’t know that this is the third piece that I have done on this classic story and film. The first two pieces were created as commissioned works back in 2015 when I first created my ‘Storyteller’ body of work. ‘Charlie’ and ‘Sink or Swim’ were obscure, narrative driven and dark, darker that one of Wonka’s bars of chocolate lodged in Augustus’ deep crevasses and folds! Really?! Sorry, like I said, welcome inside my mind! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘Wolves, Wonderment and Wanderlust’ is a truly balanced boutique ‘Storyteller’ collection, it is dark, light, and downright bizarre, guess which one this falls under. The brilliant story writing (not by me!) lends itself to falling into all three but I have wanted to create a quirky and bizarre piece on this classic for an age so now was the perfect opportunity! As with my ‘Wind in the Willows’ piece, there is a vast number of opportunities to create a whole range of pieces on this masterpiece, but I must save some room for later! (You get it right?!) \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs a kid, I remember the Roald Dahl books well and I will without doubt do a collection purely on his genius storytelling. Without a doubt though, the film that starred the amazing Gene Wilder is what stirs up my fondest memories, it just has everything! You know how I love to show the proximity of darkness and light and how they are interwoven, and the film does that and more. I just love it. The settings within the factory are iconic as well as the much more recent version that starred the brilliant Johnny Depp. It was crucial that my version didn’t end up being influenced by either of those, that would have been lazy and too easy. So, what you see is a glimpse inside my mind, my imagination. I hope you like it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘We are the Dreamers of Dreams’ takes the ‘Wonderment’ spot from this collection. The aim was to create that open mouthed reaction if you were to walk into the cavernous opening within the factory. Just don’t keep your mouth open too long, way too many parrots and toucans up there! There’s a lot to take in eh! The intensity of the backdrop is nuts, and that’s before you even notice the paddle steamer! There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction that’s going! Well, it’s heading into a tunnel but what lays in wait? That’s where you come in, I’ll pass the wheel to you. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe serene chocolate river is a contrast to the powerful waterfall that cascades downwards. That detail was introduced from my love of challenging myself technically. ‘Hey You Guuuys’ (Goonies) was a much earlier piece that featured magical waterfalls within a cave and I was waiting for a new opportunity, so here we are. This piece is a classic example of how I set off on a journey creating the scene but without being too concise and pre-planned. I wanted it to evolve, to go off on random deviations as my imagination opens up. I guess that is what makes artists different to another, it’s how your mind works that makes the piece authentic and true. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI wanted to inject an industrial quality but with a cute and colourful approach so that is why the pipes that transport god knows what are shaped as plastic bendy drinking straws. The ‘steam punk’ inspired paddle steamer is like no other. I didn’t want to use something like the films as like I said before, too easy, and if you have read my ‘Wanderlust’ narrative you’ll know why! The control rooms that are set within the rock walls are inspired by Gaudi’s architecture – drawing from a past art trip to Barcelona in my college days. Many of you won’t know that this is the third piece that I have done on this classic story and film. The first two pieces were created as commissioned works back in 2015 when I first created my ‘Storyteller’ body of work. ‘Charlie’ and ‘Sink or Swim’ were obscure, narrative driven and dark, darker that one of Wonka’s bars of chocolate lodged in Augustus’ deep crevasses and folds! Really?! Sorry, like I said, welcome inside my mind! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘Wolves, Wonderment and Wanderlust’ is a truly balanced boutique ‘Storyteller’ collection, it is dark, light, and downright bizarre, guess which one this falls under. The brilliant story writing (not by me!) lends itself to falling into all three but I have wanted to create a quirky and bizarre piece on this classic for an age so now was the perfect opportunity! As with my ‘Wind in the Willows’ piece, there is a vast number of opportunities to create a whole range of pieces on this masterpiece, but I must save some room for later! (You get it right?!) \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs a kid, I remember the Roald Dahl books well and I will without doubt do a collection purely on his genius storytelling. Without a doubt though, the film that starred the amazing Gene Wilder is what stirs up my fondest memories, it just has everything! You know how I love to show the proximity of darkness and light and how they are interwoven, and the film does that and more. I just love it. The settings within the factory are iconic as well as the much more recent version that starred the brilliant Johnny Depp. It was crucial that my version didn’t end up being influenced by either of those, that would have been lazy and too easy. So, what you see is a glimpse inside my mind, my imagination. I hope you like it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘We are the Dreamers of Dreams’ takes the ‘Wonderment’ spot from this collection. The aim was to create that open mouthed reaction if you were to walk into the cavernous opening within the factory. Just don’t keep your mouth open too long, way too many parrots and toucans up there! There’s a lot to take in eh! The intensity of the backdrop is nuts, and that’s before you even notice the paddle steamer! There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction that’s going! Well, it’s heading into a tunnel but what lays in wait? That’s where you come in, I’ll pass the wheel to you. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe serene chocolate river is a contrast to the powerful waterfall that cascades downwards. That detail was introduced from my love of challenging myself technically. ‘Hey You Guuuys’ (Goonies) was a much earlier piece that featured magical waterfalls within a cave and I was waiting for a new opportunity, so here we are. This piece is a classic example of how I set off on a journey creating the scene but without being too concise and pre-planned. I wanted it to evolve, to go off on random deviations as my imagination opens up. I guess that is what makes artists different to another, it’s how your mind works that makes the piece authentic and true. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI wanted to inject an industrial quality but with a cute and colourful approach so that is why the pipes that transport god knows what are shaped as plastic bendy drinking straws. The ‘steam punk’ inspired paddle steamer is like no other. I didn’t want to use something like the films as like I said before, too easy, and if you have read my ‘Wanderlust’ narrative you’ll know why! The control rooms that are set within the rock walls are inspired by Gaudi’s architecture – drawing from a past art trip to Barcelona in my college days. The characters were just so quirky and great and the whimsical English riverbank scenes were the perfect backdrop, along with the contrasting darkness of the weasels and the wild wood. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt's funny, as I sit here and write this narrative to accompany this piece there is a beautiful weeping willow tree and it’s flipping windy! The only thing is it’s mid-February so there are bugger all leaves on it but there are the small signs of buds forming. I love it when I see these as I love when Winter turns to Spring, something that I use a lot in my work as a concept. The only downside of seeing these little green lumps is that it also shouts to me that I have to soon start on the preparation for the next collection later in the year! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWay back in 2015, there was a commissioned piece on The Wind in the Willows entitled ‘Appetite for Destruction’ – no, the Guns and Roses belter wasn’t part of the soundtrack, imagine that! Basically, my interpretation of the stories back then was a surreal one, and a dark one at that. It focused on the self-destruction of my favourite character, Toad! I loved his eccentricity and chaos. That piece is one to seek out as it plays out the point where Toad Hall is in flames and burning and all that remains is his cherished sports car that sits beneath a beautiful willow tree. Details that surround the car suggest a dark scenario, it’s beautiful and dark. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHowever, despite fighting the urge to inject darkness whilst creating ‘Wanderlust’, I am so pleased with what you now see. The aim was to create a truly beautiful and serene piece that would sit perfectly with ‘Keep Me in Your Heart’, my earlier ‘Winnie The Pooh’ piece that captured the imagination of so many. It’s great to really mix things up as an artist and my ‘Wolves, Wonderment and Wanderlust’ represents exactly that. I love switching from a quirky retro inspired piece to a really dark and intense scene and then dropping something like this that is just utterly beautiful and light. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is so much potential to create many pieces based on the The Wind in the Willows, the Wild Wood appeals and I will tackle that, but ‘Fight or Flight’ takes that spot in this collection as it is set within a dark forest. Well, that was born from being petrified as a kid on a boating lake in Ypres – Belgium and I don’t think I’ve been in one since, a swan pedalo doesn’t count right? I set about basing this piece on the river, not only because I knew that it would become a wonderful image, but I like to test myself and working with water and the reflections is a challenge to get it right. Especially when you have little points of reference to guide you when you choose to have a goggle wearing toad and smiling mole frolicking (that’s a great word isn’t it!) in the water. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWanderlust represents a strong desire to travel, so I thought it a fitting title for what you see before you. I have built on that and evolved it to become the desire to be free also, in whatever form that happens to be. I love to connect with my collectors in many ways and this image is a classic example of one that can simply be enjoyed as a beautiful and happy image, whilst also representing a secondary meaning. A genuine family favourite of mine as I remember watching the 1983 film with my brothers way back as kids one night before Christmas and the book didn’t prepare me for what was to come, genuinely terrifying and real, no silly effects or big actors, just images that still make me go cold to this day. It was the power of the figure on the marshes that was the most gripping, the sense of isolation and truly being haunted by someone with so much subtle anger. I own one of the original video cassettes of the film and have made countless friends sit down and watch it in the pitch black, patio doors open and all, it was the first film that my partner and I watched together, obsessed? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI’ve also been lucky enough to watch the play adaptation at the Fortune Theatre twice and absolutely loved everything about the venue and the play so the chance to create my own interpretation and tell my story is incredible. The intention has always been to create a scene that was beautiful, serene and calm yet that showed details that pulled on the heart strings, that were full of sorrow and sadness and that would make you think a little deeper. I wanted to compose a piece that did just the same as the original did, to inject a small detail that turned the image on it’s head, that detail being the unforgettable silhouetted figure of Jennet Drablow dressed in her funeral attire. The thought of creating something dramatic and over the top didn’t interest me, it just wouldn’t be right for this subject. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is one point where on the marshes Arthur Kipp knows that something terrifying is there and spins to reveal the silhouette, I wanted to create that factor where you are focused on the beautiful detail, you know something is there but try to avoid looking because you desperately don’t want to see her. The impact that Jennet had on all those who saw her was brutal and most often terminal but it is another case of not being born bad, it shows what we assume to be a normal woman who’s life is turned upside down through bearing a child out of wedlock and then losing him twice. We see hatred born towards her sister Alice who took her son from her and who couldn’t save him from the sinking mud and rising tide of the Nine Lives Causeway committing Jennet to a world of hatred and inflicted insanity. Is blood truly thicker than water? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt really is a story of the unforgiven - Jennet for having a child out of wedlock and Alice for being blamed for taking her son and not saving him. Details within the scene show the relationship between Jennet and her son, Nathaniel, an ageing teddy, a wooden train (links to how Arthur travelled to Criffin Gifford), poignant images that showed so much more before she faded to black. As with so much of my work I have created the piece to leave a lot to interpretation rather than dictating, you might look at it and think that you are looking at the point in time within the original narrative however if you look a little deeper you will notice the ruined Eel Marsh House, a broken rocking chair (I had to do that as that damned thing terrified me!) that suggest that time has moved by and the shifting tides have withdrawn to reveal objects previously hidden. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYet Jennet remains, destined to stand there alone. It is such a terrifying story line, how could it not be when children are lost in horrific circumstances throughout, yet personally the subsequent remakes of the film seem to make it hard to find any apathy towards the woman in black because of how hyped up every detail was. The aim was to create a really striking, colourful and ultimately beautiful landscape that resonates the sense of hope that those who seek it out cling to. A magical landscape full of extremes, beautiful poppy fields, mountains and waterfalls where the warm tones of central sun shines brightly and directly onto the brick road, look closely and you will realise that the yellow is coming from the sun that guides and warms you but the bricks are nothing other than ordinary. Is it a case of blinded by the lights? Fools gold? One poignant detail within the serenity of the sky above the Emerald City is a hot air balloon, surely the Wizard isn’t in there and bailing out? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis piece epitomises the contrast and proximity of darkness and light, literally split into two. The road takes many a twist and turn and this particular point sees it framed and flanked by the darkness of the forest where any fears that you might be carrying come to life in the darkened light of the tall trees that are pinned together by a giant spiders web. In line with my Storyteller pieces the characters are not directly shown, instead you can picture these depending on with how you interpret the piece. However the key characters who walk the road are all referenced within the forest some might be a little harder to spot but for those who know how my mind works should find it easier! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat I have strived to create is a piece that on first glance looks beautiful and cute but on a closer inspection you notice that there are darker elements that sit within the shadows, even things that are deemed as positive and beautiful appear to be leaving a trail of darkness in their wake. This is done to convey the obstacles and hindrances that those who set off on their journey for fulfilment and salvation will meet, some blatant dangers, others much more cunning and disguised and ultimately more dangerous. What I personally feel is so lovely is that amongst all of the obstacles and distractions is Toto the dog, sitting there looking right at you and just waiting for you to continue onwards, unwavering loyalty and companionship. Her blood dried up long ago and she knows any tears shed would wound her, possibly even be fatal if the floodgates were allowed to open. What we see of the wicked witch of the west is a woman scorned, an absolute bitch with terrifying powers who holds so much hatred towards her opposing sister that she didn’t shed a single tear when she was flattened, or actually was that just her protecting herself? Is Dorothy simply a scapegoat for something much deeper and older? There is talk of the wicked witch of the west falling foul to her fathers favouritism as a young girl with her sister being the apple of his eye - there continues the green theme again! What actually happened to make her skin literally turn green with envy? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor someone to be that full of hate and hurt they would have lost all sense of context and reasoning way back, she knows not what she does surely? Has her wickedness become a genuine art form for her? Are there any human qualities left under that shell of carbon? Does she still have a soul, a single strand of hope to see her be saved? Or is she too far gone? What this piece will does is take on a similar style and narrative to my 2016 ‘High Ho’ piece where I showed Snow White is a much darker light but where there were signs of innocence, fragility and hope and that is what I have strived to achieve with this piece. I originally planned to create a roomset but chose to focus on the throne to portray a stronger sense of power and dominance, a setting for where plans and spells are formulated, or a place to sit within her shell where she waits and 'bleeds'. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a window into the world outside through her crystal ball that rests against her throne, look closely and you will see the same scene as featured in ‘The Long And Winding Road’. The detail within the piece suggests that she is wrestling with her demons whilst retaining what is left of any good, is she too far gone? The decor is an intriguing mix of brutal objects and soft furnishings that glow green and subtle detailing that hints at a personality trapped. The aim was to create a real open-ended piece where certain objects make you question what has already happened possibly, the water? the slipper placed within a box that sat empty for so long? There is definitely more than meets the eye here and again something to consider in general. I enjoy presenting a scene full of drama that you would happen to stumble upon when walking through a dense woodland. One that is compact to the point that a few metres either side and you could easily walk by never knowing it existed, or try to retrace your steps to go back to what you are sure you saw but never find, maybe it was all just a dream? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTall, dense trees that filter light through whilst creating imposing and ever-changing shadows, mist that creeps and winds around them from a previous shower, a forest floor that is so full of life and detail where so many creatures wake when others sleep and the notion that the forest becomes enchanted, a true fairytale. Sat against one of the trees is a jaded Nick Bottom who sits dejected after having his head turned into an donkey by the mischievous Puck during a rehearsal of a play. An act that was designed to scare off the other characters and upset him but failed to achieve what was intended. The queen of the fairies Titania sits alongside Nick with her arms draped around his neck offering comfort and support. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is such a beautiful image that on first glance can be quite random but when you look closer it portrays so much more and was the catalyst for my narrative that drives this piece. Like with the majority of my work there exists darkness and light, sadness and hope, each side by side and battling for control. This is the case here as I have combined beautiful detail and a piercing light source with subtle tinges of darkness that linger in the shadows and try to encroach on what is good, or vulnerable. Coming into the scene, appearing through the glow is Oberon, the king of the fairies, a beautiful deer wearing a wooden crown has a wonderful dream-like feel, something that you might just happen to see in a glance of an eye or when the light expands and contracts. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA solitary white dove that symbolises protection to a loved one whenever used in my work rests on a branch above which only strengthens Nick’s resolve and fuelling his determination not to be beaten. You might also notice a hare sat on it’s haunches, it’s funny I had always intended to introduce animals to my forest setting and this particular time of day here in the studio sees rabbits and hares come out from the hedgerows and their burrows and sprint about in front of me. It is so good to see as the reflection from the large studio windows allows me to watch largely unseen however they do seem to have an incredible sense of danger and speed of reaction so because of this I have positioned one close to the characters so as to become a look out and alert them at the first sense of trouble. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThrough finding comfort and support from those close and in spirit Nick draws from this and rises above Puck, instead of being crushed and defeated by looking like an Ass, he finds the strength to sing! The aim was to create a piece that lived up to the enormity of the play and that embraced all that is wonderful whilst putting my own twist to it and showcasing my own style. A genuine family favourite of mine as I remember watching the 1983 film with my brothers way back as kids one night before Christmas and the book didn’t prepare me for what was to come, genuinely terrifying and real, no silly effects or big actors, just images that still make me go cold to this day. It was the power of the figure on the marshes that was the most gripping, the sense of isolation and truly being haunted by someone with so much subtle anger. I own one of the original video cassettes of the film and have made countless friends sit down and watch it in the pitch black, patio doors open and all, it was the first film that my partner and I watched together, obsessed? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI’ve also been lucky enough to watch the play adaptation at the Fortune Theatre twice and absolutely loved everything about the venue and the play so the chance to create my own interpretation and tell my story is incredible. The intention has always been to create a scene that was beautiful, serene and calm yet that showed details that pulled on the heart strings, that were full of sorrow and sadness and that would make you think a little deeper. I wanted to compose a piece that did just the same as the original did, to inject a small detail that turned the image on it’s head, that detail being the unforgettable silhouetted figure of Jennet Drablow dressed in her funeral attire. The thought of creating something dramatic and over the top didn’t interest me, it just wouldn’t be right for this subject. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is one point where on the marshes Arthur Kipp knows that something terrifying is there and spins to reveal the silhouette, I wanted to create that factor where you are focused on the beautiful detail, you know something is there but try to avoid looking because you desperately don’t want to see her. The impact that Jennet had on all those who saw her was brutal and most often terminal but it is another case of not being born bad, it shows what we assume to be a normal woman who’s life is turned upside down through bearing a child out of wedlock and then losing him twice. We see hatred born towards her sister Alice who took her son from her and who couldn’t save him from the sinking mud and rising tide of the Nine Lives Causeway committing Jennet to a world of hatred and inflicted insanity. Is blood truly thicker than water? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt really is a story of the unforgiven - Jennet for having a child out of wedlock and Alice for being blamed for taking her son and not saving him. Details within the scene show the relationship between Jennet and her son, Nathaniel, an ageing teddy, a wooden train (links to how Arthur travelled to Criffin Gifford), poignant images that showed so much more before she faded to black. As with so much of my work I have created the piece to leave a lot to interpretation rather than dictating, you might look at it and think that you are looking at the point in time within the original narrative however if you look a little deeper you will notice the ruined Eel Marsh House, a broken rocking chair (I had to do that as that damned thing terrified me!) that suggest that time has moved by and the shifting tides have withdrawn to reveal objects previously hidden. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYet Jennet remains, destined to stand there alone. It is such a terrifying story line, how could it not be when children are lost in horrific circumstances throughout, yet personally the subsequent remakes of the film seem to make it hard to find any apathy towards the woman in black because of how hyped up every detail was. My hope is that I manage to make people think, to consider the events that took a woman, a mother and made a monster. \"They have asked for my story. I have told it. Without doubt, it is the series of chapters based on the classic fairy-tale Snow White that has seen me return the most to continue the story. Yet the more pieces that I create across other subject matters and their characters, it has made me aware of how there is so much synergy between them, and I love that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo ‘Lithium’ is the following chapter to an earlier piece entitled ‘Mirror Mirror’ where we saw Snow White’s empty glass coffin within the forest. It was showing that point where you either effectively seal your own coffin and choose your own fate through decision making or you allow help in to help you escape your ‘forest’. What I mean by that in reality is that this is no fairy-tale, there is no eureka moment or epiphany – instead it is a brutal journey shrouded in shadows and complete darkness, yet one that can twist and turn towards a beautiful light, one that brings warmth, comfort, and healing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e A method of depicting this journey is to link it to the changing seasons. It is darkness and light, shadows, and sunlight in its most literal form. This is where my past pieces come into play. Mental health has, and always will be a driving force within my art, I wish it wasn’t but if it helps then I am glad that through affiliation I have built a portfolio of art that can do genuine good. ‘For Now I’m Winter’ and ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ convey the same message and remind ourselves that Spring will follow Winter and that brighter, happier days will come.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA more recent piece ‘Fight or Flight’ is based on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, but it flows beautifully with ‘Lithium’ through it portraying this ‘journey’ and the battles that lay ahead.It was this piece that made me debate whether Snow White should have her hood up but without a doubt no. The driving force for this piece and its narrative is to open your eyes, to look within. To soul search to find strength and to start to walk forwards. Lift your head up, instil self-worth, hold your damned head up!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e What we see is that point, where she is tentatively walking away from her ‘Winter’ towards her ‘Spring’. Such Winters can, and do last way longer than a few months. Days are shorter, darker, and claustrophobic, there is barely any light. This world becomes normality and there is seemingly no way out or will to fight. Laying amongst the shadows means out of sight and out of mind, no more burden. Here in the darkness, you know yourself. Cold rain drowns your will to fly, you can’t break free until you let it go. Seemingly gone but not forgotten. Never!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery forest, no matter how dense and dark has its clearing, its way out. ‘Winter’ can leave you frozen in fear, cold as ice to the chance to change. Yet your future is not set in stone, chip away at it, carve a path, baby steps, focus. Hold your head up! Just like in meteorological terms, Spring can take longer to show that it is coming but it always comes. The first snow drops to bloom are the ones with the strongest roots, that rise upwards to catch the first warmth of Spring and with that brings happiness to others, keep growing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInner strength, self-worth, self-belief, and trust in others combine to help you on your journey into Spring, to keep building and strengthening to embrace Summer. Of course, even amongst the brightest of sunshine, shadows are cast, and warmth can fade but it is that strength and momentum gained beforehand that will set you up for when the light dwindles. Let others help you, guide you. Some are nearer than you realise, others watch from a distance. For others, the best you can hope for is so far short of what you need but draw strength through their spirit that drives yours. It is the perfect story to suit my love for darkness and light and exploring the depths that people go to in the name of love. Roses have been used throughout my work, both digitally and physically and the plan was to focus on this for this third instalment. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the plan initially and for some time before was to create a scene within the ‘Beasts’ rose garden, the potential for beauty is huge and I know how it would look. Yet for me personally at this point in time, I need to really challenge myself, to distract and to hopefully reach new levels through the need to consume myself in my work. So, for this reason alone I opted to keep that idea locked up and instead look to create something that was different from what people may expect. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo achieve this, it was all about composition and introducing a surreal, fantasy-like quality to hopefully provoke a ‘bloody hell I wasn’t expecting that’ reaction. As an artist, you shouldn’t ever rest on your laurels or become formulaic – I hope you can see that I strive to evolve and learn through listening. I think this is why this collection has smashed me to bits through the intensity that I have put in. I need it, you deserve it, so it’s simple. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘The Power of Love’ positions you stood on a clifftop looking down at this incredible landscape\/seascape \u003cem\u003e(is that even a thing?!)\u003c\/em\u003e you know what I mean anyway! The composition is done in this way to get you involved as I’m sure you can relate to the concept in some fashion. The initial image that inspired what you now see was showing a rock at a much smaller scale, I saw intrigue in changing this, so it became huge. Ripples then become powerful waves; you see where I’m going with this? The castle and the galleon that would typically dominate are dwarfed by the solid rock that stands strong against the ever-flowing tides and waves that roll and crash into its surface. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis came together so well and without stress, it was exciting and exactly how I wanted it to evolve. Then my attention turned to the sea and the symbolic rose. I strove to create them in a way that they resembled sea creature type objects that rose upwards and broke the surface, almost as a show of force and powerful gesture. There are ones that look withered and faded in contrast to others that shine bright and have risen above the waves. Technically this was tough and I’m glad it was. The end results are so pleasing, and I feel that it really adds to this surreal quality that I have pushed for. What do you think? \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA much earlier artwork entitled ‘My Spirit Will Live On’ featured a face in the rock and I still love hearing how you have only just discovered it. As a child I always remember trying to catch the right angle as we drove past a rock in Menorca where you could see a blatant Red Indian for a split second. Maybe that is where this has all come from? So maybe there are more to find, that links the ‘Storyteller’ and ‘Love Knows No Bounds’ pieces together beautifully. As soon as you see it and see the connection, it changes everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overriding purpose for this piece is to acknowledge the lengths that one goes for love and the power that one’s love for another can hold. This play on scale and perspective acknowledges this. It is so much more than a pretty picture although you are free to simply enjoy it as that, but if I know my collectors, I am pretty sure that you will relate to it for many a reason and I look forward to hearing what it means to you.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI hope you love this artwork and what it conveys and means to you. I have taken a bold step to introduce the cloaked figure with the single intention that it truly transforms the emotion that this piece of art exonerates. By being shown from behind, I hope it resonates with many, many people. The moment I placed the figure (I refrain from saying ‘her’ for the reason I just mentioned) it genuinely brought tears to my eyes. I know why I created this piece and that moment when the impact of the image and its narrative just hits you right in-between the eyes. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYou see someone who is on a path, a journey, a moment when they walk on, approached by, and flanked by wolves. Each wolf represents another challenge, another beast that needs to be tamed, if not killed. Look closely, a wolf is literally on their back, I did say look closely! Now look at the cloak, look at the sheer depth and richness of that red. With that saturation comes shadows and there lies the problem. Light and dark, very dark. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBlackened, twisting thorns are interwoven with red roses and drive their way through the forest floor. Darkness resides to light in such a way that it can trip you up, the most painful falls are the unexpected ones. Sweetest tongue, sharpest tooth. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRose petals from their cloak leave a trail of love and kindness reinforcing that the figure is good, wonderfully good yet who’s feet grow tired with the weight of the wolf on their back. Not every beast can be killed, sometimes it is just the acceptance that it can’t ever truly be slain but it can at least be tamed through the act of love, loving oneself. Keeping one’s wolves at bay can be enough to help you on your path. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA truly beautiful and pivotal detail within this scene is what exists beyond the figure, a clearing, a brief respite. What exists even before that is crucial. A beautiful white deer stands fixated and offers that much-needed guidance. Look upwards, the all-seeing owl offers wisdom in decision making. All hope is not lost. It never will be. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA copse can over time turn into a forest, those trees grow taller, denser, and harder to navigate between. The roots if fed, grow deeper and thicker and turn what was a thin trunk into something much stronger that creates darker shadows. Branches grow outwards and mask the light, to the point that it becomes harder to see the light of day and you become lost, lost in a forest of denial. If left unattended, what was once easily managed becomes so gnarled and claustrophobic that all hope can become lost and the brightest of sunlight is unable to penetrate through. Forests have clearings that offer respite and space to breathe, space to think before you’re back amongst the thick of it but stronger, taller. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEveryone is different, everyone’s reasons for becoming lost are different. We all choose different paths, we deviate off them, we are pushed and kicked off them but with guidance we can, and always must find our way back to our path. That path may then look very different to how it looked when our footsteps were lighter and shadows smaller, or when more walked with us, but it is our path. Keep your head up so that you can see the signs and your eyes open to acknowledge the dangers. How far in do you go before you admit and accept that you are lost? Do you choose a longer way out but it’s your way or do you accept guidance from others? There’s never any shame in that, sometimes the forest is just too dense and dark and you’re tired. With tiredness comes weakness and that leaves you open to attack from the wolves, either those that surround you, those that hide and hunt in packs or from the wolf within. Which has the sharpest tooth? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut please, no matter how dense the forest is that you walk within, remember that every forest comes to an end, and in its place, space to see, space to breathe and with it, the first steps on your path. You hold the axe, make your mark, small, sustained cuts initially or a single blow. This applies to how you enter, and how you leave your forest. The strongest trees can fall. In 2016 I created a piece entitled ‘Policemen \u0026amp; Pirates’ that explored the synergies between Peter Pan and Michael Jackson and was set within an abandoned Neverland Ranch. An imposing and condemned pirate ship, rusting bus and rollercoaster stood still, surrounded by signs of happier times where childhood innocence was king. It was a good example of how you would really need to explore the image to realise that it was based on a blatant story that so many of us hold so dearly. This was effective by choosing to avoid including any characters within the scene. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn complete contrast and a year on, I embarked on another style of working (‘Through Darkness \u0026amp; Light) that involved me creating bold imagery where the central character dominated but through being shown in silhouette, made up of hundreds of layers of smoke and a multitude of lighting effects and tiny shapes. So, 2017 saw me release ‘Forever Young’, a vivid and incredibly powerful piece where Peter is seen rising above the London backdrop into a starlit sky. It represents that want and need that we must go back to the moment when things were so much easier and to soar over untroubled waters. That piece proved to be incredibly popular and sold out in all editions. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 2018 and as part of my ‘A New Chapter’ body of work that celebrated my move to being an independent artist, I chose to portray the wonders of ‘Neverland’ in piece entitled ‘My Idea of Heaven’. Creating this piece was incredibly calming but challenging, I had set myself a high target to create the most beautiful scene imaginable. The more I worked into the piece, it took precedence over ‘Neverland’, the detail is there of course but something existed that influenced my way of thinking. For within ‘Heaven’, as with ‘Neverland’, age is irrelevant, you become truly free, reunited. I have always loved the end results, but I knew that so many of my collectors were desperate to see a piece that was more in line with what they imagined their ‘happy place’ being. I had always said ‘never say never’. Never is an awfully long time after all. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e2021 saw me start to acknowledge this when I released ‘Where Dreams Are Born’, an incredibly popular and adored piece by so many that took you inside the beautiful nursery with a wonderful secondary narrative that resonated so strongly with you all. The image linked my previous Peter Pan pieces together as it showed the point where Peter was leading the children off past the second star on the right and straight on ‘til morning. What this picture does is show exactly what comes from dreaming, and that doesn’t necessarily mean from when you are asleep, it’s your imagination, it’s using the power of thought to transform yourself to somewhere and someone completely different. I loved how cherished this piece is, however what came from that was a hunger to then see where the children would end up and to see the ‘ultimate Neverland’! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo here we are, it’s February 2025 and I have delivered on my promise. ‘Always Be Waiting’ has been created in the hope that it is everything that you hoped it would be, bright, bold, beautiful, surreal and enchanting. In February 2024, I focused entirely on one single image (‘Love Ain’t Dead’) to allow me to throw as much time and thought as needed into creating a statement for how that year would run. It worked! Years prior to that I had released a set of three pieces, but I much prefer just focusing on one at this time of year. It would take as long as it needed to, which is how I always treat each piece. I guess it is a combination of me being respectful of my collectors and not overwhelming them, whilst also being mindful that, through their loyalty, I am incredibly busy! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere are so many possible directions that I can go down with ‘Neverland’ and without a doubt I will, in time. Going in land would be dramatic and whimsical, I already can picture it! However, I was drawn to building my own interpretation of a mermaid lagoon under a magic moon as I absolutely love the effects of turquoise waters that ripple and at certain moments reveal what lays beneath its surface. It is a perfect balance between land, sea and sky as each is of equal importance. The original plan was for the ‘Jolly Roger’ pirate ship to be much more dominant, and it would have looked great, you only have to look at my 2016 ‘Goonies’ piece entitled ‘Hey You Guuuys!’ for that. However, the effects of the sky and horizon that I had built was so successful that it niggled me when an object encroached that. It’s these little tweaks that can make a huge difference, even if most of you wouldn’t notice. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI love to hide details within textures, I absolutely love how Peter’s side profile is formed within the clouds that build. It’s that ever-changing process where you just happen to see it before it starts to bubble back into normality. The children are also then depicted within the clouds. The contrast between the star canopy and giant moon against the warmth from the rising sun is so powerful. The whole process of creating this piece was so relaxed, it is how it should be but isn’t always the case for various reasons. I guess it was being able to sit back and stare at the success of the backdrop that gave me the confidence and excitement to continue to add in the smaller details that you can now seek out. Ultimately, the success of this piece that needs to stand out above others and grab you was going to be down to the composition and the colourways, anything else would then just be a bonus. It wouldn’t have been right to then add complicated detail within the scene that could risk the cleanliness of what I had already created. It is this courage of conviction that I am continuing to build on that is driven through gaining confidence through your support. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis piece is another example where you are getting closer to completing but you haven’t decided on a title. I never want to simply choose a title for the sake of it, it must mean something so that it can resonate and give weight and meaning to the image. The decision to introduce the silhouette of Peter from the past ‘Forever Young’ was a great one, it added that wonderful sense of arriving and being met by someone so special. That would have sufficed and from that the title was born. Yet it was from hearing on occasion that some collectors thought that it was ‘Tinkerbell’ not Peter back in 2017 that gave me the idea to create her to add something even more special into the piece. It works so well I hope you agree. Oh the cleverness of me! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo there you go, has it been worth the wait?! For me, yes without a doubt. I love it! It is incredibly satisfying as it represents an artist who has found a balance between staying true and continuing to tell their story and keeping in mind the tactical element of timings, which is a tricky one as absence makes the heart grow fonder…or forgetful. I will always listen to feedback and encourage interaction. As always, I see this as a collaborative effort, and I hope that you love this piece as much as I do. It is not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do that is the secret of happiness. It’s a positive and vibrant image that is driven by a wonderful narrative and sentiment that we can relate to as we seek to journey on to our own ‘Neverland’ for our own individual reasons. The horse that takes centre stage shows so much emotion and is deep in thought, majestic almost. My aim is to first see the beautiful horse in its’ surroundings and then notice the pole, painted saddle and the cracked skin to reveal signs of a darker past. Now that the horse has broken free it has cast off the shackles of yesterday and embracing the freedom that comes from that. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is mirrored by the suggested relationship between Mary and Bert which shows a number of references to this and how they have brought what was once hidden into the open for all to see! Objects within the grass that typically shock are made to look beautiful as this is how the two love birds see what they have between each other. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat I have created is a scene based on the original narrative that is set in parkland on a beautiful English Summers’ day with the dome of St Pauls showing over the treetops. A racecourse extends across the composition with riders and horses thundering by. Light as always plays a key role here creating warmth and calm whilst the brighter areas are there to represent hope. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eButterflies flutter around the pole moving upwards, the style of these has been done in a way that relates to the flat colours of those used in the film as contrast to the background. Dandelions fill the grass to enhance the lightness and delicateness of the piece, there are tiny seed details where they are floating upwards. In the background there is Mary Poppins’ carpet bag and the white umbrella that she held within the park \/ fair scene with subtle hints of magical detail surrounding it. Birds are a key part of the film and I have includes two within the softened background, as well as Berts’ blue bow-tie that rests against Mary’s bag. Nestled within the grass is the signature Matryoshka doll that references my first published collection. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eKey characters from the story stand within the long grass, a disgruntled turtle and some penguins, of course! I deliberately left until last as it was a case of how on earth do you introduce such characters into such a beautiful scene without it looking random and stark. So what I have done is create a connection between one of the penguins and the horse where they are fixed on each other. There is subtle dream-like lighting detail and icons that are radiating off the penguin leading upwards to the horse, it creates something really wonderful and more importantly a talking point as to what is going on and why there is such a lovely affiliation. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor me it epitomises what I am conveying through this image, beauty, intrigue, freedom, hope and subtle randomness. He is undoubtedly good, he resides amongst all these terrible giants yet has made it his life’s work to catch dreams, filter them and give them to the sleeping children. Look at his relationship with Sophie, really lovely. However what if the lines became blurred? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo those who see him in his cloak, in the shadows, tie him to the disappearance of the town’s children, but he keeps telling himself he is good. Everyone has demons, voices, doubts. What if his naive, child-like nature was infiltrated and overwhelmed by these dark thoughts? It’s just a bad dream isn’t it? You always wake up fine, unaffected, right? They’re just children, it’s just a dream. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn a clear state of mind, when he’s on the job he meticulously filters and sorts the good from the bad, my piece sets out the scene when for reasons only known to him the dream bottles have been mixed up. How can something so beautiful do so much bad? It’s just a dream anyway... will be fine in the morning anyway. Are these from the townsfolk or are these in fact the battles in his head laid out for all to see? It is a much, much darker version - awful in places, even for me! What we all know and love from the Disney version is so far from the reality here it is scary.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece is a classic example where I build a secondary narrative into the piece that then takes over and consumes the image, albeit it making it much more beautiful. There is no fairy godmother - instead a pear tree that grew on Cinderella’s dead mothers grave whilst birds flocked together as one to destroy the ugly sisters in a way you would not think possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo this piece runs in line with the overriding concept that pushes Cinderella into that coach and that gets her to the ballroom to ultimately be rescued by her Prince yet it represents so much more, to me and hopefully to others who can find affiliation to the concept.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe doves, an incredibly poignant detail throughout my work, come together when one simply isn’t enough in the hope that working together they can make the difference as they desperately try to help the person who has fallen, who sees no way out, before it is too far gone. Yet what defined a happy life? A life built on materialistic luxuries that glossed over the cracks that ran riot.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hope was to create a piece that makes you change your opinion on the girl out of view, we can be so quick to judge and dismiss. I try to encourage a closer look, for clues that create empathy towards the young woman. Is she a monster, or is she the victim of the cards that she has been dealt?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo for this piece entitled ‘Fear Is How I Fall’ it sets a scene that can either be the prequel, or sequel depending on how you view it. Have you walked into her room before her downfall, where you notice the contributing factors starting to blow in from the world outside? Or are we actually in fact seeing her after being rescued once again by her Prince who simply could not walk away like others who had already done so.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you favour the latter you will notice that cracks remain, clouding the clear. Do her phantoms still stand tall behind her? Her wounds, they will not heal. The title ‘Fear Is How I Fall’ suggests fragility, bringing with it empathy. So, what you can see in the image is an absolute buzz from all the butterflies fluttering around, the smoke rising up from the chimneys, the sunlight coming through the buildings, the clouds, the birds, the clock within the glass dome with the hands running away from themselves. Everything’s just stopped. The working title for the image was ‘Please Don’t Leave’ linking to ‘It’s Not Goodbye’, it’s two people effectively talking to each other, silently if anything, reassuring that nothing is forever, and we will meet again. So, it’s a really beautifully, poignant concept behind a very pretty image. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt actually relates to a 2016 commissioned piece entitled ‘The Beast From The East’ which was a much darker concept where it’s showing within the same setting, a toxic, dominating relationship that Mary and Bert had. It was something that I completely put together myself and it was pretty intense! Yet what you now see is that it’s a new chapter, things have moved on, evolved and are much lighter. What you have within this ultra-urban space is the impact of this persons work, where everything is so beautiful and unexpected within that environment and it’s what you leave behind, effectively. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis concept of evolution with the butterflies being set free, the leaves changing colour, the flowers growing and withering but new ones coming in their place, there’s just so much going on. It’s an image that I feel incredibly happy to have created, there’s a sense of comfort achieved, it’s how I talk through my art. I hope that so many people will find the same sort of comfort within this piece from what I’m trying to say, as well as it being a really quirky reference to ‘Mary Poppins’. A recent trip out to the cinema with family to watch the ‘Christopher Robin’ movie was the catalyst to begin as the narrative caught me out, seeing the consequences of neglecting one’s family because of work played out in such a considered manner struck a chord and pulled at the heart strings. Innocent yet guilty. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe challenge for this piece was deciding what would be best fitting, to embrace the beautiful sunlight that shines through 100 Acre Wood or to stand in the shadows of the Heffalumps and Woozles. If I’m honest, it’s a pretty even split as there is so much within the original narrative and the theories behind the characters that lends itself to a very intense and complex piece. However, at the time of planning this scene the sun was shining through the studio window and the clouds had cleared within my mind so what we see is an image that embraces everything that is enchanting and uplifting, created to make you feel comforted and nostalgic. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNew works will feature modern-day references to link to the world that we live within and seek to escape from when we reminisce, acting as a stark contrast and helping to relay my narrative. This is showcased within the scene in front of you as you look out across the stunning East Sussex landscape. A table is being set for afternoon tea, but for whose benefit? Look at the details that surround the bench, is this simply a case of parent playing out their child’s fantasy or rather their own? Maybe their love for the story still takes up so much space in their heart? Has obsession won through and the only friends dining are those still cherished from childhood? Sometimes the smallest things take the most room. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs a father experiencing the pressures that come with having a beautiful daughter racing towards her teens, it is becoming increasingly evident just how the world we look back to in seek of comfort is so completely different to the one that we reside within. This piece reflects that, it’s a tale of contrasts, darkness and light yet represented in a different way. The scene acknowledges the change from how we used to read the stories by A.A Milne as children to how ours often now do. Does that mean that the screen dilutes the scene? Probably not, is there a case for pixels actually creating a much more engaging and immersive experience for the young mind? Possibly. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy aim, as with so much of my work is to create interaction between characters, to convey emotion. What I strive to achieve is creating an image that isn’t static, where what you see now is different to the one that I created a moment before. A stark iPad left in the grass soon attracts the attention of a woodland rabbit, or two ladybirds become acquainted… It is very much what you can’t see that is as important as what you can, that is where your imagination is awakened. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs the process of creating these pieces evolves over a good number of days they can often end up very different to what was initially intended as my mindset may change, even for that short moment. I will be honest, with this piece I had to fight the urge to mutate the concept and inject another level to the narrative based around the modern-day gadgets but out of respect for all of those who adore Winnie and friends I chose not to. It’s still there, I’m just not going to tell you! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo many know and love the characters for their ‘Disneyfied’ feel and I can see why, however further embracing the contrasts I have chosen to show the original toys that Christopher Robin owned as a child that inspired his father to create his masterpieces. They are beautiful and show their age and personality so well. Christopher actually lost Roo in an Appleyard back then so exists in the modern state, sat next to Kanga this reinforces the concept. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s amazing what happens when there is tea and honey, everyone and everything joins in. What’s with the random black bear cub and swan? You won’t find these within the Disney store yet these are two fundamental animals that without them things would be very different. Pooh bear was actually inspired by both, Winnie being a Canadian bear cub that Christopher Robin saw in a London Zoo and changed his teddy bear from Edward to Winnie. As for Pooh? Well, originally Pooh was a swan, a different character entirely! I hope you enjoy this piece and it keeps you looking towards the sun. This scene shows what the children saw as they stumbled upon the witches house. The whole concept across both pieces focuses on deception and trickery, leading you into temptation and effectively then delivering you straight to evil.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo what you see is incredibly dark and sinister yet sugar coated and quirky, as well as slightly odd! Sugar-filled treats appear much larger than they normally are, or is that just in the minds of those who are tempted by them? As with my other more recent ‘Storyteller’ pieces there are a number of current references that suggest a secondary narrative that I love to inject into my work. For example, the oversized sweets and cakes link to an ongoing concern of child obesity and you will spot subtle objects such as a bottle of cola, scrawled messaging slating the ‘sugar tax’. Have you spotted the pig?! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLook how the gingerbread men appear quite sinister with one coming out of the shadows towards you akin to a horror film, one has already been attacked, is all hope not lost? The swan, a character who guided the children to safety in the Brothers Grimm version appears to be doing the complete opposite here, who can be trusted, if anyone? It’s inspired by ‘Snow White’ but the original version that was horrific in comparison to what we all think we know. That’s what inspired the ‘Storyteller’ works from the start, just how dark the original versions were that we were read as a child. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, what you see here is the second of four chapters, it was written in reverse. Chapter four was ‘High Ho’, written in 2015 where you see her at her worst. Where all of the results of her actions are laid out in front of you in this abandoned church but there is still this hint of innocence there to give you this sense of empathy towards the character that you can’t see. The third chapter, 2018 ‘Fear Is How I Fall’, you see her within the Prince’s castle with everything that she loves around her but sadly still with her demons that are creeping out from behind the curtains, from the walls. The battles are still there and will ultimately see her falling and failing. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is chapter two and shows the point where she has been saved, the seal has been broken from her coffin and she’s been set free by her Prince and by those that are trying to support her around her. That’s what the animals and the hints of the dwarves etc. symbolize. It’s a very, very beautiful image. The apple tree is dying and gnarled but there’s a point where it’s come back to life and it’s blossoming and it’s reaching out and touching the coffin, coinciding with where the dove is which is something that has always been used within my work for an incredibly poignant and personal reason. It shows that impact of someone, whether that is someone that you can physically see or one’s spirit that can make such a dramatic difference. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt’s everything that’s about the battles that ‘Snow White’ faced with her demons that raged within her head, as well as physically, whilst others are trying to protect her. The line ‘the struggle within, you seal your own coffin’ is from a ‘Metallica’ lyric that was on whilst I was consumed within the concept of the picture. You listen to a song on repeat to keep you where you need to be within it. This scene, this whole concept of ‘Snow White’ is someone who is genuine, who is wonderful, but someone who has got such intense demons that ultimately lead to her downfall but with these characters around her that are desperate to keep her where she deserves to be. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe wooden cottage in the background represents that industrious nature of the dwarves that are working so hard to protect. You have the animals coming out to surround the coffin. In complete contrast between the beautiful young deer and the wolf, you can look at it two ways. Is there a threat there or ultimately is it trying to protect? The all-seeing eye of the owl, again there is a conceptual thing there with seeing the dangers and trying to warn against. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe key part of this image is the mirror. This concept of who is the most fucked up of them all, that is crucial as it shows how ‘Snow White’ is battling the constant demons within, where it’s a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character effectively and what that does is reveal that actually there is no evil Queen, that it’s not a separate character, that instead it’s a trait, a split personality. That evil Queen lives within ‘Snow White’ and it’s her demons, her paranoia, her lack of self-worth that can lead her to making these decisions that she will ultimately fall with. The closer you look at the image the more you can see this battle with darkness and light. Hopefully from knowing this concept behind it makes the tiniest of detail incredibly poignant and powerful. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis picture really does personify why ‘Storyteller’ is so incredibly powerful and key for me, taking me back to years ago when the original chapters where created, it’s certainly a marker and it just shows why I am an artist, why I create what I do. This is my idea of Heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun is rising over the clouds, bringing with it new hope, with the warmth brings comfort. The upper branches of the trees and the mountaintops poke through the clouds with magical fairy detail dancing around them. If you then spot the pirate ship it does then make you question whether it is actually flying through clouds or sailing through a mist, a question of scale comes into play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, you interpret it the end result is truly immersive and captivating. I have long had an affiliation towards the Aurora since being lucky enough to have visited Lapland several years back, if you look closely you will spot them, look closer and you will see that they are actually made from peacock feathers! The beauty is within the detail here, there is no devil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCreating this piece was incredibly calming and challenging, I had set myself a high target to achieve with creating the most beautiful scene imaginable. This is where the piece started to transform and take on a new meaning. For me and many I would hope that there can be no other place more beautiful than Heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more I worked into the scene it took precedence over Neverland, the detail is there of course but something exists that influenced my way of thinking. The original story gives the impression that Mr Banks doesn’t spend too much time with or have too much time for his children whilst his mother is focused on the Suffragettes movement. This means that Mary Poppins takes on the role of their primary carer. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat I have then done is to twist things so that we introduce a gambling addiction for Mr Banks (horses) and the negative impact of this is played out within the nursery. A carousel type horse smashes into the wood floor and dominates the scene, not only does this link to the story where they become detached from the fair ride and bounce all over the bloody place but it adds drama and signifies the impact that this addiction now makes on the family. The horse is actually real yet has been retouched to look like it is not, with cracks forming. This represents how something that started out as playful and fun evolved and grew into something very real and quite dark. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe mothers dedication to the Suffragettes movement is referenced by the white sash that has a line from her song ‘cast off the shackles of yesterday’ - this was chosen as it acts as a call to action to Mr Banks to seek to stop the gambling and cast away his demons from his past. I have then chosen to show the childrens’ frustration towards the family set up by them turning on their Nanny and being vocal (through wall scribbles) that they don’t see or want Mary Poppins as part of their family, they want their parents back. Mary is shown in a good light here, offering guidance through a scrawl on the wall ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ which means if you sort out a problem immediately it may save extra work later. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUltimately the piece takes small references from the story and manipulates them to depict the negative impact an addiction (gambling and a passion) can have on a young family where the children ultimately lose out. Both parents are aware of the issues but are simply papering over the cracks. There are further suggestions to this within this crazy and bizarre scene that is overrun by birds - well they were warned not to feed them!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe working title for this piece was ‘A Spoonful Of F**k Knows!’ as I wanted to create something completely and utterly random! This scene set within Regents Park in London is a follow on from an earlier piece ‘Cast Off Your Shackles’ where this time a magical Carousel dominates the scene and provides the platform for so much detail to interact with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aim was to create a piece that is so intense, bold yet pretty, classic yet current and I hope that I have achieved that here. This piece along with others within my latest ‘Storyteller’ works showcases a slight shift where I have sought to bring pieces that might initially look classical bang up-to-date with references that suggest a much more current time frame. It’s driven by mental health. I will always do my research into each subject and that is what resonated with me with the links to the mental health side to the original story. The insecurities that Alice faced, being scared of adults etc. That was the driving force behind this piece. Everyone is touched by mental health in so many different ways and with so many different outcomes and contributing factors. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor me what is so interesting is what do you see when you stand there looking into that scene? Do you see an enchanted forest with the light trying to push through the fog or are you actually under water? Are they reeds and weeds with the jelly fish etc.? What I’ve done is try to trick you because I didn’t just want this to become a ‘Tim Burton’ type piece, there are parallels to my work and that’s why I love his films. The Jelly fish are there instead of toadstools, you can see the similarities with their shape but for me it was the idea of them swaying, with everything moving. That’s the idea when you’re in that state of mind and things are so intense and almost giddy, everything starts to sway, it becomes too much, a bit surreal. Or you can just look at it like you’re off your head! How do you interpret it? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEverything is littered out around you, the pressures that you face that will help you fall down. Like the drink, the oversized macaroon, they’re all symbolic. The mirror links to my ‘Snow White’ piece from this collection. It’s what you see looking back at you. ‘You’re too small’, ‘I’m too big’, ‘I’m mad’. It’s these things that you’re either told or tell yourself. Another link with that piece is that my concept with the ‘Queen of Hearts’ is actually Alice, that it’s a split personality. It’s her darkness that is trying to push her back down that rabbit hole and keep her there. It’s just me trying to put my take on it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe door being central is key, the door to reality. It just shows how close that is to wherever you are and however far down you are. It’s how easy it is to fall back down. Amongst all of the darkness there is this lovely detail like the butterflies that I use so much to represent being free that are coming out from the shadows and rising up. There is so much to seek out and interpret, what does this picture mean to you? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI’ve loved creating this piece, it’s the widest scene that I’ve done and that’s for a reason. If you imagine when you are stood there, as I put you in the position of every ‘Storyteller’ piece, it’s how much you can take in that is in your line of vision. Darker versions tell of the prince being obsessed by her and raping her whilst alseep which is pretty bad, not something I would reference but only adds to the intensity of the story. My concept is to portray a scene where a girl became a mother at a young age and subsequently life passed her by, effectively being asleep (there’s a reference to being fine before the little prick!). The baby reference is therefore used without any refernence to anything worse. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDetail within the piece outlines her state of mind and the battle with her demons. The battle between dark and light, good and bad battle it out within her four walls, being the thorns and the roses. The fact that the thorn exists so close to the petal on a rose is perfect and is why I use so frequently as I use it to symbolise the two sides to a person’s character and their personal battles. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eShe has regressed within her walls and herself, yet there are still subtle touches that depict beauty and serenity, yet so close to how she sees herself (the reason the mirror has been taken down from the wall and defaced). Her scrawls on the walls, bed and mirror are based on lyrics by Arnor Dan (vocalist on ITVs Broadchurch and lead singer of Icelandic band Agent Fresco). The song in particular that inspired me with the concept for this piece is ‘Bemoan’ - it’s incredible and fitting, all about not wanting the bell of age to ring for him - to not be left behind and how his demons are so tall and so many that he cant see the white of walls. I thought I knew how it was going to look, I knew it was going to be a nursery scene and a London skyline but it’s lovely to see how it has evolved from immersing myself within the piece and putting myself in that room and keeping the image totally light, as much as the temptation to add some form of darkness to it, I’ve not, I’ve resisted, it’s completely light. There’s nothing in there and if can see anything dark in there then you’re certainly darker in mind than me!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt shows that point that’s linked to ‘Forever Young’, my 2017 piece where we see Peter depicted in this really vibrant silhouette rising up in front of ‘Big Ben’ but what you see is this beautiful nursery scene with Peter and the children flying upwards and past it but instead of being surrounded by the London skyline, when you look from left to right you see this heaven-like ‘Neverland’, which was a 2018 piece entitled ‘My Idea Of Heaven’. So, it shows this journey from reality to where you go in your dreams. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat’s what this whole piece is about, the power to dream and it’s so poignant now because of the restrictions that our children are living with, never mind us but for our children to not be able to do this, to not be able to do that. It just makes you worry what is in their head and more importantly what’s not. When you think back to being a kid and the roleplay and the freedom to really play without any restrictions, without any genuine danger, what came from that was beautiful and I guess that is the worry with the restrictions at the moment. Of course, they are going to lift but it’s still this bigger concern questioning whether kids have really forgotten how to play, have they forgotten how to dream? \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat this picture does is show exactly what comes from dreaming and that doesn’t necessarily mean from when you are asleep, it’s your imagination, it’s using the power of thought to transform yourself to somewhere totally different which results in being somebody completely different. Whether that’s through confidence or something you want to do later on in life from being inspired by these dreams. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt’s a really beautiful, classic nursery setting with all of the toys laid out which shows the point before where they were playing and fuelling their imagination. The closer you look, there are some really lovely details that link to these earlier pieces like ‘Forever Young’ and that’s what I’m trying to do. If you can see on the wall there is a ‘Little Mermaid’ piece called ‘Hope’ and you can imagine Wendy looking at that image and being inspired to imagine and to dream. As you look closely you will see her mermaid rising up from the bed. The ‘Forever Young’ piece represents being free. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt’s just a really, really lovely image and I’ve loved working on it, I absolutely love how it has turned out, it’s just lovely to look at and I’m really proud of it. What is key is what’s central. You’ve got the dolls’ house and what that symbolizes is that happy family environment, that tight unit that fuels everything.
